Bryce Huff’s time with the Philadelphia Eagles looks like it will last only one season despite signing a three-year, $51 million offseason contract. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Eagles are negotiating a trade to send Huff to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a mid-round draft pick.

At 27, Huff reportedly restructured his contract to facilitate the trade, which won’t be finalized until June 1st. This decision follows a disappointing season in Philadelphia, where Huff started just six games and recorded only 2.5 sacks while dealing with injuries that limited him to 12 games. Although he returned late in the regular season and participated in two playoff games, he was inactive for the Super Bowl.

The situation became murkier when Huff failed to attend OTAs, raising questions about his future with the Eagles. With offseason workouts informal at this stage, there was still an expectation for Huff to prove himself after a subpar season, especially with the Eagles losing key defensive ends Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat to free agency. Reports following Huff’s absence indicate that he is not part of the Eagles’ plans for the upcoming season.

While his stint in Philadelphia was underwhelming, Huff showed star potential during his last year with the New York Jets, posting 10 sacks and 21 quarterback hits in 2023, which led to his big contract with the Eagles. Moving to the 49ers offers a chance for Huff to regain his form and reunite with Robert Saleh, his former Jets head coach during his breakout year. Saleh, who served as a consultant for the Green Bay Packers in 2024, recently returned to the 49ers as defensive coordinator for the second time.

Fan Take: This trade could be a pivotal moment for Bryce Huff and the 49ers, giving him a fresh start to bounce back from a tough year. NFL fans should watch closely, as this move might influence how teams approach rebuilding and managing contracts after a high-profile signing doesn’t pan out as expected.
