Martin Blandle suggests that momentum is building in the ongoing rumors linking Max Verstappen and George Russell to the Mercedes seats. A recent report from Sky Italy reveals that Verstappen is engaged in "specific negotiations" with Mercedes and appears ready to accept Toto Wolff’s offer to join the Silver Arrows.

For more than a year, Verstappen’s future has been heavily speculated upon, with Mercedes hinting that their four-time world champion could be a potential replacement for Lewis Hamilton. Meanwhile, Russell’s contract expired at the end of the season, and despite a strong start to 2025, he has yet to receive a contract renewal from Mercedes.

The delay in extending Russell’s contract only intensifies the speculation of Verstappen moving to Mercedes. Expert Martin Brundle, who collaborates with Sky Sports F1, believes Russell is beginning to feel the pressure. Brundle told Sky Sports, "I think George is nervous! Something’s definitely happening. There’s no smoke without fire."

He added, "The 2026 season is a game-changer with major updates to the chassis and power units. Mercedes is definitely making moves. Can Max get out of his contract? Something is definitely brewing…"

Toto Wolff, speaking to the media including crash.net after the Austrian Grand Prix, expressed hope that Mercedes will finalize their 2026 driver lineup by the end of the summer break in August. Wolff emphasized the importance of respecting the process for the team, drivers, and stakeholders.

"We are in June, and although there is a lot of discussion, we want to be transparent and fair in our decision-making. We hope to conclude things before the summer hiatus," Wolff stated. While he confirmed that talks have taken place with Verstappen’s representatives, Wolff insisted it is "highly unlikely" that the Dutch driver will join Mercedes in 2026.

Fan Take: This developing story is critical for racing fans because it could reshape the landscape of Formula 1’s top teams and driver dynamics. If Verstappen moves to Mercedes, it would kick-start a thrilling era of rivalry and innovation, especially with the pivotal 2026 rule changes on the horizon.
