Austin FC forward Brandon Vasquez has suffered a torn right ACL, which poses a setback for his chances of making the US squad for the upcoming World Cup.

The 26-year-old sustained the injury during the US Open Cup quarterfinal against San Jose on Tuesday and is scheduled for season-ending surgery on Thursday.

Vasquez went down without any contact in the 69th minute, just four minutes after he had successfully converted a penalty kick to equalize the game at 1-1. He had to be carried off the field on a stretcher.

The MLS All-Star joined Austin from Monterrey in January and has been the team’s leading scorer this season with nine goals across all competitions. He has also netted four goals in 11 appearances for the US national team but was not included in this year’s Gold Cup roster.

Austin won the match 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw and is set to face Minnesota on September 16.

This injury is a significant blow not just for Austin FC but for the US national team as well, particularly as they prepare for the World Cup. Fans should keep an eye on how this impacts the team’s dynamics and player selections moving forward.
