Newcastle United goalkeeper Odesssease Vlakodimos has linked his move away from the club during the summer transfer.

According to a now-deleted tweet from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 31-year-old had the opportunity to leave the loan, but declined to move to the La Liga MX side Pumas.

Newcastle reportedly has been monitoring James Trafford in recent weeks, suggesting that Vlakodimos has no future at St. James Park. If he secures movement this summer, it would be ideal for all involved. However, Greece’s international denial refuses to go out on loan.

Odysseas Vlachodimos wants European football

At this stage of his career, normal first-team football is extremely important to Vlachodimos, and sitting on the bench in Newcastle is not beneficial to anyone. Conversely, the club is keen to offload fringe players like him to release wage bills and make room for future signatures.

With Champions League football secured for next season, Newcastle is building a team that can compete in multiple ways. Letting go of surplus players is part of that vision. Vlachodimos, who aim to continue competing in European football, reportedly rejected Pumas because of their non-European status.

Will Laliga move on the horizon?

The deleted tweet from Romano hinted at the interest of La Liga Outfit Villarreal. It is still unclear whether the European side will move forward with specific offers. For now, both players and clubs are in range and the coming weeks will allow us to determine the future of Vlakodimos in Newcastle.
