The Kentucky Oaks is shifting to a prime-time slot for the first time in 2026, as announced by Churchill Downs Incorporated and NBC Sports. The 152nd running of the Longines Kentucky Oaks, showcasing the top three-year-old Thoroughbred filly, will take place on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 7 PM CT and will be broadcast on NBC and Peacock. Besides the exciting races, the event is known for its fashion tradition, which now will conclude with a spectacular Twilight finale.

John Miller, president of NBC Sports’ acquisitions and partnerships, expressed enthusiasm about the Oaks returning to Churchill Downs on a Friday night, forming part of a historic weekend of racing leading up to the Kentucky Derby on the following Saturday. Bill Carstanjen, CEO of Churchill Downs Incorporated, emphasized that moving the Kentucky Oaks to prime time reflects a dedication to promoting one of horse racing’s most cherished traditions on a national platform. This decision aims to grow the sport, attract new fans, and provide unforgettable moments for racing enthusiasts.

The Kentucky Derby, America’s oldest major sporting event, will follow with its 152nd running on Saturday, May 2, 2026, also airing on NBC and Peacock. The 151st Kentucky Derby on May 3, 2025, was the most-watched “Run for the Roses” since 1989, drawing up to 21.8 million viewers with the victory of Sovereign. In May 2024, NBC Sports and Churchill Downs extended their long-standing partnership, which began in 2001, marking a 30-year commitment to broadcasting this prestigious event.

Fan Take: This prime-time move for the Kentucky Oaks is a game-changer for horse racing fans, as it elevates the visibility and excitement of the sport’s most stylish and competitive race for fillies. By expanding its audience and spotlighting tradition alongside top-tier racing, this shift could usher in a new era of popularity and growth for horse racing nationwide.
