MotoGP Experts Propose a Superior Alternative to Liberty Media’s F1 Crossover Idea

F1 and MotoGP are both owned by Liberty Media, sparking increasing discussions about the possibility of crossover events between the two racing series. In a recent interview with SpeedWeek, Dona’s chief sports officer Carlos Ezpereta expressed openness to the idea of a MotoGP/F1 crossover race, saying, “It’s all worth trying once.” Liberty Media aims to expand MotoGP’s reach, so while a crossover might face challenges, there are certainly ideas being explored for the future.

One crossover event that seems more achievable is a joint MotoGP and World Superbike event. Crash MotoGP editor Peter McLaren shared on the Crash MotoGP podcast his interest in doubleheaders featuring both MotoGP and World Superbike. He noted that while Formula 1 often sells out venues, it may not benefit as much from crossovers due to its global venue variety. However, combining MotoGP with superbikes at certain locations could help grow both championships. McLaren emphasized, “Let’s try it,” given that both series share the same promoter, Liberty Media. He also mentioned the potential excitement of seeing wingless bikes and ride height devices on the same track during the same weekend, suggesting it could be more appealing than an F1/MotoGP doubleheader.

Crash social media manager and podcast host Jordan Moreland highlighted the potential impact such events could have on attracting new fans, particularly for the UK Grand Prix at Silverstone. He imagined the boost if world superbikes were part of the race weekend, adding value and drawing in fans to see stars like Toprak Razgatlioglu. Moreland believes hosting both championships on the same circuit would significantly increase attendance and fan engagement.

Fan Take: This news is exciting for racing fans because it shows Liberty Media’s commitment to innovating and expanding the motorsport experience. Bringing these high-profile motorcycle and car racing series together could create thrilling, unique events that attract broader audiences and elevate the sport’s global appeal.
