Jakub Vrána, the 29-year-old Czech forward, has committed to a two-year deal with Linköping HC, a team in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), as announced by the club on Friday. The transfer had been widely rumored for over two months. Vrána is making a return to Linköping, where he initially played from ages 15 to 19 and gained his first experience in professional hockey, recording 34 points in 98 SHL games as a teenager.
Vrána expressed a sense of inevitability about this move in the club’s announcement, saying, “I felt this day would come eventually. I’m very excited to represent Linköping again and eager to reconnect with the city and the organization.” Born in Prague, there was speculation about him signing with Sparta Prague in the Czech Extraliga, but Linköping emerged as the preferred choice.
Reflecting on a busy summer, Vrána noted that after leaving the US, several European options were available, but returning to Linköping felt right. He emphasized his gratitude for the club, where he grew up, trained at the academy, and got his first chance to play senior hockey.
Linköping’s sports director, Peter Jacobson, shared that while Vrána had initially hoped to secure a new contract in North America—a dream for many hockey players—the club appreciates his hunger and drive. Vrána was drafted 14th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals. He had a strong season in 2019-20 with 52 points in 69 games and frequently represented the Czech Republic at the IIHF World Championships.
Injuries and inconsistent performances affected his NHL career, limiting him to 110 NHL games over the past four seasons with 49 points and excluding him from the Czech national team for the 2024 World Championships. In total, Vrána has scored 223 points in 406 NHL regular season games, playing for the Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, and Nashville Predators. He also contributed eight points in 38 playoff games and was part of the 2018 Stanley Cup-winning team.
Jacobson praised Vrána’s offensive skills and skating ability, highlighting his improved defensive play during his time in North America. Linköping, which finished 12th in the SHL last season, hopes Vrána can bring energy and development to a squad that missed the playoffs in six of the past seven seasons. The team’s roster also features former NHL players Nick Shore, Oscar Fantenberg, Christoffer Ehn, Remi Ellie, and Ty Rattie.
