  • Tottenham extend contract with highly-rated star player in pursuit of Thomas Frank
  • Richarlison ‘already’ in talks to leave Tottenham next year

Tottenham have some decisions to make regarding the future of their first-team players, with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, star defender Cristian Romero and other highly-rated prospects linked to new deals.

Luca Williams-Barnett, Tynan Thompson, Dante Casanova, George Abbott, Yusuf Akhamlić and Callum Orcesi are among the long list of exciting talent who have committed to Spurs this year, with further senior players also joining the club.

Mikey Moore, Jed Spence and Cristian Romero have also offered new terms recently, with the latter a particularly welcome boost for Thomas Frank after the Argentine attracted interest from Atletico and Real Madrid this summer.

Most recently, midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, whose contract was due to expire next summer, also agreed to extend his stay in north London, amidst an impressive partnership with summer signing Joao Parinha in the engine room.

The Uruguayan international, who has made over 120 first-team appearances since joining from Juventus, has been a key player for Frank so far, and the Dane is excited about Bentancur’s long-term involvement in the N17.

“I’m very happy that Rodrigo has committed his future to the club,” Franck said after Bentancur signed his new contract.

“This shows his belief in what we are building here and shows that we are starting a journey that we hope will become something really special.

“Rodri plays a big role in that. He is a great midfielder who can dictate the game and be the glue that holds the team together. He also has the ability to reach the penalty area, create goals and score.”

According to reports, both Real Madrid and Chelsea are interested, with Tottenham willing to double Micky van de Ven’s wages in a bid to convince the Dutchman to sign his own new contract.

However, the futures of Yves Bissouma and Richarlison are far more uncertain, despite their contracts expiring in two years.

The former has been left out of both Tottenham’s Super Cup squad and Champions League 22-man list, and it is thought he could leave in January or next summer once his term expires at the end of the season.

Richarlison, meanwhile, has drawn criticism for his inconsistent performances, with MLS side Orlando City already flying to London to negotiate a possible transfer next year, despite currently being a “key player” (Fabrizio Romano) for Spurs.

Richarlison ‘already’ in talks to leave Tottenham next year

This is backed up by former Tottenham employee and scout Mick Brown, who told Football Insider that Richarlison’s departure at the start of the new year is a real possibility.

“I think Tottenham would be prepared to let him go if he gets a good offer in January,” Brown said.

“I don’t know if he will be able to earn a regular spot in Thomas Frank’s team given everyone’s health status.

“Based on that, I think he would also be interested in moving to MLS and I’ve heard there are already discussions about whether that is possible.

“If Tottenham get a suitable offer and feel they can cope without him, I’m sure that could happen when all parties are interested and the window opens.”

The 28-year-old experienced major troubles midway through Ange Postecoglou’s first season, but his 2024/2025 campaign was marred by injury.

Richarlison also scored twice in the Premier League opener against Burnley at the weekend, including an incredible overhead kick, making him an early candidate for Goal of the Season.

He could still play a key role before the Brazilian finally leaves, with all signs pointing towards an exit in 2026, and some in the media actually believe he is quite “underrated”, as Micah Richards claimed in 2022.
