Manchester United’s £70m star, described by Amorim as ‘top’, close to leaving in January

  • Amorim plans to revamp team in January
  • Mainu needs regular first-team football

The Manchester United star, described by Ruben Amorim as ‘top’, is now almost certain to leave the club in January, with talks progressing.

Amorim plans to revamp team in January

Despite a shaky start to the season, Amorim has managed to buy time thanks to a recent rise in form, with Man United winning four of their last six Premier League games.

The United manager has identified Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes as his preferred midfield options, and the midfield duo certainly played a part in the recent 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield.

Casemiro kept the Reds at bay with three tackles, the second-highest of any player, but Fernandes continued to pose a threat, hitting the woodwork to assist Harry Maguire’s late goal.

However, Teddy Sheringham insists the 40-year-old is not a fan of Koby Mainu, and there are suggestions that Amorim does not have much confidence in the midfield backup option. “He has a certain style, which Amorim clearly doesn’t appreciate.

“He obviously wants more from Mainu. It’s up to him to try and change his game a bit to suit Amorim’s wishes.”

Reports from Spain suggest that Mainu is almost certain to leave Old Trafford in January, despite having had very limited game time so far this season, and that he has recently been linked with a move to Napoli.

The 20-year-old is determined to play at the 2026 World Cup and will need regular playing time to do so, and Napoli are currently in the strongest position to seal a deal, with the youngster potentially succeeding Scott McTominay in Italy.

Reports have not revealed how much money the Red Devils could receive for the academy graduate, but an offer of £70 million has been touted in the past.

Mainu needs regular first-team football

Having not played for England since the 2-0 win over Ireland over a year ago, it would be perfectly understandable for the young player to push for a move this January, at serious risk of missing out on the World Cup.

Amorim has previously revealed he is a fan of the central midfielder, describing him as a “top player”, but the 10-time England cap has yet to start a Premier League game this season, so it’s clear the United manager is not completely convinced.

Given that Amorim has shrugged off the pressure with two wins on the bounce, Maynou may not be reinserted into the starting line-up anytime soon, but it would be a real shame to see the final star of the 2024 FA Cup leave, as his performance against Manchester City proved he has the talent to succeed at Old Trafford.
