  • What Jed Spence told director Thomas Frank
  • Did the Spurs defender and manager have a falling out?

Tensions flared at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Jed Spence appeared to belittle Thomas Frank after Spurs lost 1-0 to Chelsea on Saturday night, sparking widespread debate.

What initially appeared to be a brief post-match exchange quickly turned into a clear moment of frustration, raising questions about Tottenham’s dressing room uniformity and player management dynamics.

The incident happened shortly after the final whistle, when Spence and teammate Micky van de Ven were caught on camera walking past Frank and refusing to shake his hand.

Both players looked visibly upset after the disappointing loss, but it was Spence’s reaction that caught the most attention.

What Jed Spence told director Thomas Frank

According to the Daily Mail’s lip-reading expert Jeremy Freeman, the 24-year-old can be heard saying: “I’m not doing that… leave” before waving off his manager’s attempts to get involved.

Freeman also suggested that Spence muttered “leave me alone…let me go” during the brief exchange, although that part of the conversation was less clear.

This outburst of emotion came after a tense match in which Tottenham struggled to create chances and Chelsea’s tactical discipline frustrated the home side.

The defeat was clearly difficult for Spence, who has recently broken into England’s system and won praise for his energetic play.

Football journalist Oliver Holt described the exchange as a “worrying sign” and suggested it could be an indication of rising tensions within the team following a string of inconsistent results.

However, Tottenham insiders insist that the relationship between Frank and Spence remains professional, stressing that both men share mutual respect and a desire to move forward.

Adding perspective, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp added: “We want the players to show some emotion. Jed is young and ambitious, but he’s clearly frustrated. What’s important now is how the manager responds and whether he turns that fire into motivation.”

Frank’s calm response suggests he is keen to draw a line under the incident, but all eyes will be on Tottenham’s next game to see how Spence reacts.
