Luka Doncic Labels NBA Cup Courts “Slippery” and “Dangerous,” Raising Concerns for Lakers

Luka Doncic spearheaded the Lakers to a 135-118 win over the Clippers on Tuesday, delivering an impressive performance with 43 points, 13 assists, and nine rebounds. Despite his standout night, Doncic raised concerns about the Lakers’ neon yellow NBA Cup court, calling attention to its slippery surface and urging the league to make changes for player safety. “I wish we could change the court,” he said post-game, emphasizing the danger as he and others had slipped multiple times.

This isn’t Doncic’s first critique of NBA Cup courts; during the inaugural 2023 NBA Cup, then a Dallas Maverick, he called out the New Orleans Pelicans’ court for its slippery conditions and uneven spots, which he felt compromised the game’s safety and consistency. The NBA Cup courts differ from regular season floors due to their full coat design and vibrant colors, which create a large painted decal effect that eliminates grain visibility and reduces traction.

Doncic had noticed the slickness even during warmups and asked for the court to be cleaned again, though the issue wasn’t fully resolved. Nevertheless, he excelled in the game, shooting above 50% from the field and beyond the arc, making 12 three-pointers—likely avoiding penetrating the paint to prevent slipping, yet still scoring heavily.

The Lakers intend to address these safety concerns before facing the Mavericks on the same floor, but any significant changes would need league approval. Given Doncic’s status as one of the league’s top players, his warnings about court safety are likely to prompt serious consideration from the NBA.

Fan Take: This news highlights the crucial need for player safety to be a priority in sports environments. If the league takes these concerns seriously, it could lead to meaningful improvements in court design, ensuring athletes can perform at their best without risking injury.
