Max Verstappen has cautioned that he needs to “survive” the upcoming sprint race in Qatar after struggling with significant bouncing and unpredictable handling in his Red Bull during sprint qualifying. Verstappen will start Saturday’s sprint at the Lusail International Circuit from sixth place on the grid, just behind his Red Bull teammate Yuki Tsunoda.
Throughout qualifying, Verstappen dealt with persistent bouncing, which caused him to briefly go off track at the beginning of SQ3. It remains unclear if his car sustained any damage from this incident, but Tsunoda overtook him in qualifying for the first time this year. Reflecting on the session, Verstappen said, “It wasn’t good. From the first lap, there was a lot of bouncing, and at high speeds, it turned from aggressive understeer into oversteer.” He added that he wasn’t trying to push harder but struggled with locking up and attempted adjustments on his steering wheel that didn’t help, making the car difficult to handle.
Verstappen acknowledged Red Bull’s poor qualifying performance and stressed the need to understand the issues. While he must compete in the sprint race with the current setup, Red Bull can make car changes afterward as it will be outside parc fermé conditions. A similar strategy in Brazil failed when a setup change worsened the car’s performance, leading to Verstappen’s elimination in Q1.
Currently, Verstappen is an underdog in the 2025 F1 World Championship, trailing Lando Norris by 24 points. Norris will start third in the Qatar sprint. Verstappen said, “With this balance, tomorrow’s sprint won’t be enjoyable. It’ll be about survival and making changes ahead of qualifying.” Sky Sports analyst Bernie Collins believes Verstappen could lose positions in the sprint if his car remains problematic. She noted, “Norris’s 24-point lead in two races is fair. Max started near the back but didn’t make a mistake, and he’s unlikely to gain much in the sprint with a car he lacks confidence in for qualifying.”
