The Anaheim Ducks faced a tough 5-3 defeat against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, marking one of their most frustrating losses this season. However, this setback provided a valuable lesson before their next game against the St. Louis Blues, offering a chance to regroup and improve quickly. The Ducks aimed to secure two points in the brief two-game series to keep their hold on first place in the Pacific Division as the Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights closed the gap.

The Blues entered the matchup seeking their third consecutive win but had to contend with injuries, including Jimmy Snageld’s recent wrist surgery and Alexei Trobchenko’s foot burn, sidelining both players. The Ducks opted for an unusual lineup featuring 11 forwards and seven defensemen. During the game, injuries struck the Ducks as well, with Ryan Strome, Nikita Nesterenko, and goaltender Petr Mrazek all leaving due to injuries. Vyacheslav Butiecs was called up from the San Diego Gulls to serve as backup goalie.

Ville Husso started in goal but was pulled after conceding two early goals, making way for Joel Hofer, who performed well for the remainder of the game. Despite the early setbacks, the Ducks showed strong offensive energy and improved defensive play, maintaining pressure on the Blues and holding them back effectively, especially in the final period.

The Ducks struggled with penalties, taking six minors, but their penalty kill was perfect, stopping all six attempts by the Blues. There was a significant shift in penalty kill personnel, with players like Jackson Lacombe removed from the unit, while Jacob Trouba, Pavel Minchukov, Radko Gudas, and Drew Helleson took on more responsibility. Ian Moore was notably effective while killing penalties, demonstrating good anticipation and positioning.

Defensively, the Ducks focused on protecting the critical low slot area and improved their coverage compared to previous games. Leo Carlson showed growth, making impactful plays on the forecheck and improving his offensive game, while Pavel Minchukov stood out as the team’s best defenseman, contributing a goal and an assist and dominating key defensive metrics. Minchukov’s ability to disrupt opponents’ plays and generate offense could signal a breakout season for the young player.

The Ducks will return home to begin a three-game homestand starting Wednesday against the Utah Mammoths. Meanwhile, an injury update revealed that Lucas Dostal will be sidelined for 2-3 weeks due to an upper-body injury, underscoring the importance of upcoming games for the team’s playoff aspirations.

Fan Take: This game underscores the resilience and potential growth of the Anaheim Ducks as they navigate the challenges of injuries and tough opponents. For hockey fans, keeping an eye on emerging talents like Minchukov and the team’s penalty-killing adjustments could be key indicators of the Ducks’ future success and impact in the league.
