  • Spurs launch bid for Conor Gallagher
  • Tottenham need Conor Gallagher after Rodrigo Bentancur’s injury absence

Tottenham Hotspur have made a dramatic move into the race to sign Conor Gallagher, making a belated move towards signing Aston Villa’s offer for the England international.

Spurs have had a long-standing interest in the former Chelsea midfielder but remained quiet during the early stages of this period.

But following a formal approach from Aston Villa earlier today, the north London club have taken decisive action to bring their long-term ambitions to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs launch bid for Conor Gallagher

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Tottenham formally submitted their bid tonight, with Aston Villa’s negotiations thrown into disarray.

Villa were understood to be close to a deal overnight, but their offer relies on a ‘loan scheme’ with conditional obligations, which Atletico Madrid are reluctant to accept.

In stark contrast, Spurs are prepared to pay around €40m (about £34m) for the player outright.

This permanent cash offer is very attractive for the Spanish giants, who are looking to raise immediate funds rather than waiting for future catalysts.

As David Ornstein reported, the structure of the contract will likely be the deciding factor. While Atlético were reluctant to sanction a temporary departure, Tottenham showed a desire to sign Gallagher permanently and quickly moved to the front of the queue.

The 25-year-old has been heavily scouted by Spurs over the summer and the club’s bosses have now decided that the chance to sign a proven Premier League player for a reasonable fee is too good to pass up.

The urgency of Tottenham’s transfer has been underlined by another injury to their midfield.

The club suffered a major blow this week with the confirmation of another injury absence for Rodrigo Bentancur, leaving Thomas Frank lacking a high-energy option in the engine room.

Gallagher’s relentless pressing and box-to-box stamina are seen as an ideal remedy for a midfielder who has looked leggy in recent weeks.

For Gallagher, the move will provide him with much-needed significant game time. He has struggled to get off to a consistent start at Madrid and is desperate to return to the Premier League and reignite his international career.

With the 2026 World Cup just around the corner this summer, Gallagher knows he needs to play week in and week out to secure a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad. A move to Spurs provides him with the platform to do just that.
