  • Palace eye new midfielder as Glasner laments squad size
        • Celtic are currently in contention with Crystal Palace and Brighton to sign ‘special’ defender
  • Gomez could sign an exciting contract with Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace are currently considering a January move for the ‘all-action’ midfielder given their lack of options in the middle of the park.

Palace eye new midfielder as Glasner laments squad size

Manager Oliver Glasner is set to leave Palace at the end of the season due to his contract expiring, and he launched a scathing attack after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Sunderland.

The Austrian said: “We feel completely abandoned. You can’t blame any of the players. They did everything they could and this has been going on for weeks and months.

“We have 12 or 13 players available in the team but we don’t feel any support. The worst thing is to sell the captain the day before we play a Premier League game.

“We’re preparing. It’s our first (full) week of training since September, but we’re selling our captain the day before the game. So I don’t understand this at all.”

One position where Glasner is particularly lacking is in central midfield, given that both Daichi Kamata and Check Doucoure are out with injuries, and the Eagles could bring in new options in the January transfer window.

This is according to a report from Catch Offside. Crystal Palace are considering a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomez this month, with the possibility of a loan or permanent move.

A number of Europe’s biggest clubs are also interested in signing Gomez, with Manchester United, Napoli, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid also mentioned as potential candidates, so there could be fierce competition for his signature.

However, Wolves are expected to pay a big fee, with it previously revealed they could ask for £50m for the £105,000-a-week midfielder this month.

He is one of his country’s “most promising young players.”

Gomez could sign an exciting contract with Crystal Palace

Hailed as an “all-action” midfielder and “ball-winner dog” by scout Ben Mattinson, the 24-year-old is very impressive in terms of winning back possession, but is also a strong dribbler.

Although Wolves are languishing at the bottom of the Premier League this season, the Brazil international, who has made 10 appearances, has occasionally attracted attention, most recently recording five tackles in a 1-1 draw against Everton, the most of any player.

Gomez is currently very experienced in the Premier League, having made 101 appearances in the top flight, so given Glasner’s concerns about the size of his squad, Palace are definitely in need of reinforcements and could be a low-risk addition to their midfield.
