Tottenham supporters were left with a twist in Andy Robertson’s eyes at Spurs in January’s signing of the Liverpool legend.

Tottenham are in contract talks to sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool

News broke today that Spurs are in talks with the Reds regarding a move for Robertson.

Tottenham have accelerated their pursuit of the 31-year-old by bringing forward plans to sign the Liverpool defender this month, rather than waiting until the summer, and it is believed talks are continuing between all parties involved.

The Scotland captain has reportedly been named as a target on a free transfer at the end of the season when his contract at Anfield expires in June.

However, Spurs moved quickly to begin talks with Liverpool over an immediate transfer in January, and the timing of their approach caught many observers off guard.

Robertson’s situation at Liverpool has changed dramatically this season following the arrival of Milos Kerkes from Bournemouth in the summer.

The Spurs entered into negotiations.

The left-back, who has made 363 appearances for Liverpool, has been restricted to just four league starts this season, which is a significant pay cut for a player who has been integral to the club’s success since signing from Hull City for £8m in 2017.

The veteran full-back admitted earlier this month that discussions with his family were essential before deciding on his next move, and admitted he remains a player desperate for regular minutes.

Tottenham’s crisis stems from Ben Davies’ serious ankle problem, leaving Thomas Frank lacking experienced options in the left-back slot.

The Dane has endured a tough start to life in north London, hampered by increasing injury problems affecting key members across the squad.

Robertson brings considerable pedigree to Tottenham’s ranks, winning nine major accolades during his time at Liverpool, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League title.

His leadership credentials and proven ability at the highest level represent exactly the qualities Spurs hope will be able to stabilize a difficult campaign, and reports suggest Robertson has already given the green light to Tottenham.

Alasdair Gold shares Andy Robertson twist from Tottenham

The former Dundee United and Hull City ace is expected to be a big earner at Spurs, with Matt Law reporting he will earn around £160,000-a-week at Anfield, but the fee to sign him in January could be a bargain.

This is according to Alasdair Gold, who tonight shared a twist he heard about the fees that may be involved.

According to a correspondent for Football London, Tottenham would sign Robertson for a much lower fee than many have reported – if they can actually get a deal done – considering he will soon turn 32 with six months left on his contract.

It could be a genius move for Spurs given their need to cover Davies, not to mention the pure pedigree Robertson would bring to Tottenham’s dressing room.

The only problem is his high salary and long teeth. So while it’s not a long-term solution, it’s perhaps a statement of intent from Spurs’ much-criticized ownership that they’re serious about competing now.

It’s been a nightmare start for Frank, but a character like Robertson could be the perfect injection of experience and leadership into the Lilywhites’ dressing room.
