The Miami Dolphins are set to promote senior passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik to offensive coordinator, multiple outlets reported Saturday.

Slowik, 38, who served as the Houston Texans’ offensive coordinator from 2023–24, also interviewed for the Philadelphia Eagles’ OC role this offseason. He played a key part in helping rookie C.J. Stroud transition from Ohio State standout to the NFL, as Stroud earned Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 after throwing 23 touchdowns and just five interceptions and finishing the year with the league’s lowest interception rate while making the Pro Bowl.

Under Slowik’s guidance, Houston jumped from the worst record in the AFC South to first place and advanced to the divisional round that year. He was, however, unavailable for the team’s most recent game. After his 2023 breakthrough and subsequent head-coaching interviews and a pay raise, Slowik’s second season saw a downturn: Stroud was sacked 52 times in 2024 (second-most in the NFL) and his interception rate rose from 1.0% to 2.3%. The Texans’ offense slipped from a tie for 13th in scoring (22.2 points per game) in 2023 to 19th (21.9) in 2024, and the unit struggled late in games — tying for 19th in third-down conversions (37.7%) and ranking 26th in red-zone touchdown rate (49.1%). Following the season, Slowik was dismissed along with offensive line coach Chris Strauser and assistant line coach Cole Popovich.

Even after the coordinator change, Stroud has been attempting to recreate his rookie-year production; he showed improvement in 2025 relative to 2024, but a turnover-prone playoff outing drew scrutiny. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans originally hired Slowik away from the San Francisco 49ers, where Slowik had spent six seasons.

Slowik joined the Dolphins this past offseason on Mike McDaniel’s offensive staff and will now take over play-calling duties for new head coach Jeff Hafley. Miami parted ways with McDaniel and tabbed Hafley — a defensive coach who spent the previous two seasons as the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator — as his replacement. With Hafley prioritizing the right offensive leadership, identifying the team’s quarterback for next season will be crucial: Tua Tagovailoa’s time in Miami appears likely to be over, so the Dolphins will be exploring options at the position.

Fan Take: This hire matters because it pairs a rising offensive mind with a new head coach who needs stability on that side of the ball, and it could reshape the AFC East pecking order if Slowik revives the Dolphins’ attack. For the league, it’s another example of coaching musical chairs that can accelerate scheming trends and influence how teams prioritize protecting young quarterbacks.
