  • Liverpool hold new talks for Wharton, he wants to join

Liverpool have made it a priority to sign the highly-rated midfielder, who is keen to move to Anfield.

Liverpool lament lack of slot depth over transfer decision

Liverpool manager Arn Slott lamented the lack of senior players available after the Reds’ dramatic late defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday.

“In the last five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10 games, we have to play mainly with the same players, the players that we have, but sometimes at the end of the game some of them may get a little tired,” the Dutchman said amid rumors that he will soon be replaced by Xabi Alonso.

I think that’s what I saw in the end today.

And in the aftermath of that defeat, Liverpool opted to block Robertson’s move to Tottenham, with summer signing Milos Kerkes replaced at half-time by the more experienced Andy Robertson.

The London outfit made the move late last week as under-pressure manager Thomas Frank looked to add much-needed experience to his squad.

Liverpool listened to this approach, given Robertson’s contribution to the club over the past eight-and-a-half years and the fact that his contract expires in the summer.

However, they have decided not to continue negotiations over the Scotland captain, who will turn 32 in March, and Robertson has also not asked for a move.

And with one star player set to remain at Anfield, all eyes are on who they can bring in, with reports on Monday revealing a new top target.

Liverpool hold new talks for Wharton, he wants to join

FSG have identified Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton as Liverpool’s number one target for 2026, and are said to have held fresh negotiations for the England international, according to reports.

The 21-year-old is reportedly attracted to Liverpool’s “solid long-term project”, making Anfield his preferred next step away from Selhurst Park.

Despite being sent off in last weekend’s heavy defeat to Chelsea, Wharton has once again been outstanding for a struggling Palace team this season, earning praise from fellow England midfielder Declan Rice.

“He was outstanding. He impressed a lot of players in training. He’s very calm and composed on the ball. He played in the Championship for the first half of the season and now he’s[joined the England squad]from Crystal Palace.”

“He’s got a beautiful left foot, a really sharp pass, and overall he’s a really solid kid who wants to learn.”

With Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister coming under fire this season and Dominik Szoboszlai being used all over the pitch, the addition of Wharton, described by Shay Given as “one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League”, makes a lot of sense.

However, Palace are expected to demand a huge transfer fee for their new star, with reports citing a figure of around £100m.
