Charles Oliveira Shares Key Tips with Justin Gaethje to Dodge Devastating KO from Ilia Topuria

Charles Oliveira understands what it takes to overcome the lightweight champion.

Ilya Topuria is currently on a break from the UFC as she manages personal matters, while a likely returning contender for the division’s top spot has emerged. Last Saturday at UFC 324, Justin Gaethje defeated Paddy Pimblett to become the two-time interim lightweight champion at 155 pounds. This victory sets the stage for a unification bout with “El Matador” in the near future, marking Gaethje’s third attempt at claiming the undisputed title.

Although many fighters have fallen to Topuria’s power inside the Octagon, Oliveira, one of his former opponents, shared with ‘The Highlight’ what it takes to avoid a similar defeat.

Charles Oliveira: Justin Gaethje must beat Ilya Topuria first

Topuria handed Oliveira a knockout loss at UFC 317, becoming the promotion’s 10th two-division champion after an impressive performance that ended early in the first round. Many predict that when the two lightweight champions face off against a relentless striker like Gaethje, the outcome could be similar.

In an interview with CasinoBeats, Oliveira discussed how Gaethje could counter Topuria’s style. “It’s a very similar fight. Both fighters seek aggressive engagements and knockouts,” he said. “Unfortunately, I made several mistakes in my fight against Topuria and was defeated. The key is to apply constant pressure, execute your game plan, attack with leg strikes, always close the distance, and look to outwork him.” Oliveira added, “Sustained pressure—landing shots, securing takedowns, and controlling him on the ground—will be crucial.”

Oliveira’s potential return after UFC 326

Oliveira has experience with both the reigning champion and the interim titleholder, which could give him an edge down the line. He is slated to return as the main event fighter at UFC 326 in March, where he will face BMF champion Max Holloway. The victor of that matchup will be well-positioned to challenge for the lightweight title.

Considering Oliveira’s submission win over Gaethje in 2022, a strong showing against Holloway would boost his chances for a rematch with “The Highlight.” Oliveira has faced setbacks in regaining the lightweight crown, losing to Islam Makhachev and Topuria, and previously losing the title due to a weight miss.

Fan Take: This news is significant for fight fans because it highlights the shifting dynamics in the lightweight division, promising exciting matchups among top contenders. The potential unification bout and Oliveira’s resurgence could redefine the hierarchy in a weight class known for its fierce competition and thrilling fights.
