“I Want Space”: Inside the Rift Between Jean Silva and Fighting Nerds Teammate Mauricio Ruffy

Gian Silva has openly acknowledged that his relationship with Mauricio Ruffy deteriorated after his former training partner switched teams. Both fighters are recognized as some of the most promising talents on the Fighting Nerds roster, which also features Caio Boralho and Carlos Prates. Recently, they both enjoyed career-defining victories during the UFC’s opening week—Silva secured a win over Arnold Allen at UFC 324, while Ruffy delivered a knockout against Rafael Fiziev at UFC 325.

In the weeks leading up to their fight, Silva unfollowed Ruffy on Instagram, sparking rumors about tension between the two. Now, Silva has shed light on their dispute, expressing a desire to put distance between them, though he refrains from revealing specific details. Despite the rift, he still wishes Ruffy well and hopes he seeks the help he needs.

During an interview with Rahn Viana, Silva explained the situation in Portuguese (as translated by YouTube), saying, “I think there’s a lot to explain. Luffy is on that side, and I’m on this side. It’s a private matter, so I won’t disclose anything. All I can say is that I want to distance myself from him, and I think he feels the same. If he says otherwise and claims he cares for me, I hope that’s sincere.”

When asked about Ruffy previously praising him and wanting to train together again, Silva responded by wishing his former teammate good luck. He acknowledged Ruffy’s exceptional talent but also stressed that Ruffy has personal struggles to overcome. “I hope he seeks help—not just for himself, but for others like me. Many athletes want to see him succeed. He has star quality but also issues he needs to resolve,” Silva said.

Silva also shared that he personally attends weekly psychiatric sessions and hopes Ruffy will find similar support. He concluded by stating that the bond they once shared no longer exists outside his own mind.

Fan Take:
This revelation highlights the complex dynamics behind the scenes in MMA, reminding fans that fighters are navigating personal challenges alongside their professional careers. The fallout between Silva and Ruffy could impact team relationships in the sport and underscores the importance of mental health support for athletes at the highest level.
