  • James Trafford is struggling for Man City
  • The goalkeeper wanted to represent England at the World Cup.

West Ham United are reportedly preparing a summer approach to sign Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford as uncertainty grows over the young Englishman’s future at the Etihad Stadium, according to Sports Boom.

Trafford’s return to City last summer was seen as an important step in his development, but he has been frustrated by limited opportunities and could potentially make another move.

With the 2026 World Cup just around the corner and competition from England intensifying, the situation at Trafford is becoming increasingly delicate.

West Ham are now poised to take advantage of City if they decide to allow the transfer.

James Trafford is struggling for Man City

Man City re-signed Trafford two years after his move to Burnley, showing confidence in his long-term potential.

He started the opening three Premier League games and has had a promising start to the season.

However, with the late arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma, the goalkeeping hierarchy changed dramatically.

Manager Josep Guardiola likes Donnarumma’s experience and managerial presence, and Trafford’s league minutes have been limited.

Despite maintaining his professionalism, the lack of consistent playing time has inevitably affected his momentum.

Trafford’s limited role also affects his prospects in England. Currently trailing behind Jordan Pickford in the national team, the 23-year-old was hoping regular club football would strengthen his case to challenge for the number one spot under manager Thomas Tuchel.

Trafford’s ambitions to compete at the highest level may therefore depend on finding regular minutes elsewhere.

West Ham United are monitoring developments closely. The Hammers are thought to be evaluating long-term goalkeeping options and see Trafford as a modern ball-playing keeper who can fit into their setup.

There have also been reports of links with Aston Villa, suggesting competition could develop if City begin negotiations.

However, West Ham’s move is expected to depend on their Premier League status for next season.
