Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently keen to sign an “exceptional” Championship star who has been compared to Arsenal’s Victor Gokeres.

Wolves look for new striker as they struggle in attack

It has been an unforgettable season for Wolves, who are almost certain to be relegated from the Premier League, scoring just 18 goals all season and falling a whopping 17 points from safety.

Most recently, Rob Edwards’ side narrowly fell short against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, losing 1-0 after Dean Henderson saved a first-half penalty from Tolu Alokodea.

The Nigerian has struggled to make an impact since joining Molineux in the summer, scoring just two goals in the Premier League, but Edwards refused to be too critical of the striker, saying: “He had the confidence, he had the courage to step up and that can happen. I would never criticize him for missing the penalty.

“Toru was our No. 9 and he was positive about the ball. It’s important that you don’t change in that moment. There may be a lot of people who want to take it, but Toru was drafted No. 1 and he wanted to take it at that time.”

The Old Gold strengthened their front line in the January transfer window by signing Adam Armstrong from Southampton, but remain keen to bring in a new striker this summer.

Sports Boom reports that Wolves have entered the race to sign Swansea City star Zan Vipotnik, whose impressive performances this season have sparked interest from a number of Premier League teams.

Burnley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland are also considering signing Vipotnik, whose style of play has drawn comparisons to Arsenal star Gokeres.

Vipotnik won the championship

Jacks currently sit in 15th place, but the Slovenian striker has scored 16 goals in 31 games, more than any other player in the second tier, and is on track to win the Golden Boot award.

The Swansea star has been in great form over the past month, scoring six goals and providing one assist in his last seven games in the Championship, and was praised by former manager Alan Sheehan after scoring twice against Norwich City in October.

Sheehan said: “He (Vipotnik) was exceptional. It was a high-level goal and you saw a player who really enjoyed his football.”

Prior to his move to Molineux, they had already signed Armstrong, who scored 11 Championship goals for Southampton this season, and if they can get Vipotnik over the line as well, they could form a formidable striker partnership…
