  • Lampard aims to gain team experience
  • Barkley’s situation at Aston Villa

According to SportsBoom, Conventry City are interested in signing Aston Villa star Ross Barkley, with the Premier League side willing to let him leave.

Manager Frank Lampard is keen to reunite with the experienced midfielder if promotion is secured, and sees him as a key addition to strengthen his side as they look to remain in the top flight.

Coventry remain at the top of the Championship with a nine-point lead over third-placed Ipswich Town with eight games remaining.

Automatic promotion is firmly within reach, with the club already starting to plan for a life in the Premier League.

Lampard aims to gain team experience

Lampard’s influence is central to Coventry’s transfer thinking. The former Chelsea manager is understood to be prioritizing players with Premier League experience, recognizing the challenges that newly promoted teams often face in avoiding immediate relegation.

Barkley, now 32, fits that profile. The midfielder has had a long career in England’s top flight, representing clubs such as Everton, Chelsea and Aston Villa, and has also earned caps for the England national team.

Lampard knows Barkley well from their time together at Chelsea, where the midfielder had his most productive years. This existing relationship is believed to be a key factor behind the interest in Coventry.

Barkley is under contract with Aston Villa until 2027 after the club activated his extension clause earlier this season.

The move was intended to protect his market value rather than guaranteeing a long-term role within the team.

Barkley has been a contributing player for the team, but his chances of securing a regular starting spot are limited due to competition for places at Villa Park. According to reports, Villa could respond to an offer for the midfielder if a suitable bid is made during the summer.

For Barkley, a move to Coventry could provide an opportunity to play a more prominent role, especially in a team built around his experience and leadership.
