Fears of Liverpool failing to qualify for the Champions League have eased after a strong showing and Chelsea’s struggles in the Premier League.

But Arne Slott remains a man under pressure, overseeing a disastrous title defense at Anfield and most recently watching his beleaguered side suffer knockout defeats against Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain in the FA Cup and Champions League respectively (both by 4-0 scorelines).

If FSG decides to stick around this summer, Slott will have to oversee a number of significant improvements. Players like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, for example, need to step up their game as they have underperformed since joining for a total of £240m last summer.

You might think that two of the most talented attacking players in Europe would return to the form that led to FSG stripping them of their checkbooks, but Liverpool could do with a little more support and they have their sights set on a new top winger to join their ranks at Anfield.

High-profile winger chooses Liverpool

Liverpool are barely riding the crest of a wave in the Premier League, but if they can secure their place among Europe’s elite next season, Slott and co could have more than enough to regain superstar status.

However, Isak has not done well enough and Liverpool will need to return to intimidating Newcastle standards if they are to challenge for the biggest titles.

However, with Mohamed Salah leaving at the end of the season, that will become difficult and Liverpool need a new winger to counter the latest changes.

According to TEAMtalk, Anthony Gordon could be brought in to help with the changing of the guard. The 24-year-old is believed to be looking for a change of scenery this season, with Liverpool already having started talks with his agent in a bid to sign the Newcastle United winger.

Bayern Munich are set to compete to sign the Three Lions star, but Gordon, who came out of Liverpool’s youth set-up as a boy, is thought to be keen on a return to his homeland.

Gordon’s price is believed to be £70 million.

Why Gordon could be Liverpool’s new Isaac

Gordon could be the perfect player to bring Isak back to the highest level. After all, the duo wreaked havoc at Newcastle under manager Eddie Howe, and combined 10 times head-to-head for the Tynesiders.

Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 for a fee of £45 million. Since then, he has had many ups and downs, but his highest score was certainly high, and he performed well enough to suggest that he has the potential to become a leading winger in the Premier League.

To be fair, Gordon has already been described as a forward that “every manager would want” by Liverpool analyst Asim Mahmoud, who suggested he could be a valuable addition at a time when Hugo Ekitike is out for an extended period with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

That instant impact could allow Gordon to not only impress alongside Isaac, but emerge as the talismanic force his former teammate was meant to be on Merseyside.

Of course, Liverpool will be looking to repeat last summer’s record-breaking raid at St James’ Park, but adding Gordon to their ranks will also solve their desperate attacking problems, with the winger hoping to enjoy a more notable return than Isak throughout his first spell on Merseyside.

Although he has struggled at times this season, Gordon has been particularly productive in the Champions League, scoring 17 goals in all competitions. His combative energy and aforementioned ability to play in a variety of attacking roles suggest he would be well-suited to feature for Liverpool under the wing in the slot, and his proven experience in the Prem is an added plus.

Gordon is not a perfect wide forward, but he is dangerous and dynamic. As for his relationship with Isak, the evidence is clear that he could actually emerge as a new version of the Swedish striker in the slot, joining from Newcastle but yet to make the immediate impact that was envisioned.
