The long-running contract negotiations between Ibrahima Konate and Liverpool appear to have come to a successful conclusion as the France international has confirmed that a new deal is on the horizon.

After months of speculation about his future at Anfield, the powerful defender has provided his most concrete update yet, much to the relief of Liverpool fans.

Ibrahima Konate close to agreeing new contract with Liverpool

Regarding the progress of negotiations, Konate revealed that discussions with club executives have reached an advanced stage.

In words shared with X by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the 26-year-old centre-back expressed his desire to remain on Merseyside for the time being.

Konate said: “We have talked with the club and we are close to an agreement. I think everyone has wanted it for as long as possible, but we are moving in a good direction… We have an agreement.”

The defender has been a key part of Liverpool’s backline since joining from RB Leipzig in 2021.

Despite suffering occasional fitness problems, his partnership with Virgil van Dijk has contributed to Liverpool’s defensive stability over the years.

By securing his future, the club effectively locks up a player coveted by top clubs, including Real Madrid.

Ensuring Konate’s long-term commitment requires more than just standard updates. It is a key part of Liverpool’s succession plan.

Captain Virgil van Dijk’s contract is currently expected to run until 2027, and the club are keenly aware that the legendary Dutchman’s time will come to an end.

Tying Konate to a new deal would give the Reds much-needed continuity. The Reds have already signed Jeremy Jacquet, who is expected to play in the first team next season.

Finalizing Konate’s terms would represent a major win for the sporting department, as the main contract situation is still being monitored across the team.

This will ensure the club maintains a world-class foundation at the heart of the back four, no matter how the defensive personnel changes over the next two seasons.
