Coventry City are set to turn heads in the Premier League and break a club record this summer to sign Solva Thomas from Stoke City.

Coventry take pole position with Solva Thomas transfer record

It’s been a great summer in Coventry. Now that they have achieved the unthinkable, they must do what has seemed impossible to many over the years by staying in the Premier League.

The Sky Blues could follow either Sunderland’s blueprint or Burnley’s blueprint in the coming months, with the latter almost certain to end in relegation.

The Championship winners will look to repeat Sunderland by signing an unlikely player after being tempted by Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

Rumors are already spreading rapidly in this regard. Names like Carl Rushworth threaten to grab the most headlines, with rumors suggesting he could make a permanent move to Coventry this summer.

He could then be joined by other reported targets, such as Union Saint Giroise’s Kevin Mac Allister, the older brother of Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister. The defender, who boasts Champions League experience, would be a great addition.

According to reports, the Sky Blues are willing to spend money and could even beat the current record fee of around £8m set for Craig Bellamy in 2000.

According to Sports Boom, Coventry are leading the race to sign Thomas from Stoke City this summer, and will need to pay around €25 million over the next few months.

Interest from Fulham and Sunderland will make Dougie King wary, but it is the newly-promoted side who have the biggest interest in the winger.

Why Coventry should avoid Thomas £22m

To his credit, Thomas had a great season at Stoke. The winger has played a key role for the Potters, scoring 10 goals in the Championship and assisting a further 13. But whether that justifies Coventry’s transfer record-breaking £22m move to the Premier League is another matter.

The Sky Blues need to spend this summer wisely and spending big money on a winger who has never played in the Premier League would be a shock and a classic rookie mistake by a promoted side.

The fact that Thomas has scored 10 of his 17 goals in the Championship in 175 appearances this season is a big red flag. Signing the 27-year-old, who just came off an unusual season in terms of final product, would be a big gamble with a high price tag.

The good news is that this is a sign of intent from Coventry, who know better than anyone how much it costs to remain in the Premier League.
