  • Italian winger has chance to revive his career
  • Chiesa wants more clarity on his future under Iraola

Federico Chiesa’s future at Liverpool is still up in the air, but the Italian winger is not ready to make a final decision before speaking to new manager Andoni Iraola.

According to reports from Italy, the 28-year-old wants to clarify his role at Anfield before deciding whether to stay and compete for a place this summer or press ahead with a move.

Chiesa’s first spell at Liverpool did not go as many expected.

Signed from Juventus in 2024, he arrived with great fanfare but has struggled to gain momentum due to injuries, tactical issues and limited appearances.

He started just one game in the Premier League last season and was featured only briefly under Arne Slott.
A potential departure in January was reportedly thwarted as Liverpool lacked attacking options at the time.

Now, with the arrival of Iraora, the situation changes completely. Following Slott’s sacking, Liverpool confirmed the former Bournemouth manager as their new head coach on a two-year deal, with the club attracted by his attacking, energetic style of football and his track record in the Premier League.

For Chiesa, it could be a new chance or the final sign that he needs a new club.

What’s interesting is that Chiesa still seems open-minded. He reportedly wants to understand Iraola’s plans during the preseason before being called up to the majors.

That’s the smart thing to do. A new manager means a clean slate and Chiesa’s speed, direct running and ability to play across the front three could be useful in an intense pressing system.

But Liverpool also need to be realistic. Chiesa is currently 28 years old and is not a young prospect waiting to develop.

If he’s not going to play regularly, continuing to keep him as an option on a hapless team isn’t going to help anyone.

He remains open to various possibilities, including returning to Italy if regular football is not available.

Chiesa should have a proper pre-season under Iraola before Liverpool make a final decision.

He’s too talented to be given a fair shot, especially after such a stop-start period.

But I have to be honest about this. Chiesa could be a useful offensive weapon if Iraola sees a role for him. If not, Liverpool should let him go while his value and reputation remains strong.
