Sevilla forward Rafa Mir has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison for sexual assault and assault following an incident in September 2024. Although Mill maintained his innocence throughout, a jury in Valencia found him guilty on multiple charges.

Mir, 28, was on loan at his former club Valencia at the time and returned home early on Sunday morning with two accomplices and two women. The next day, a 21-year-old woman filed a complaint with police alleging sexual assault.

Wolves’ Rafa Mir scored a hat-trick in Spain’s 5-2 Olympic quarter-final victory over Ivory Coast on Saturday.

Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of 10 and a half years in prison for sexual assault, including physical penetration and assault. According to Diario AS, Mir had claimed that the incident took place with the victim’s consent, but the court ruled that she did not and sentenced her to eight and a half years in prison. He was then arrested by the police and released on bail.

The victim’s testimony met three requirements for a burden of proof that exceeds the presumption of innocence. Lack of unexplained details, plausibility of explanation of events, and consistency of explanation of events. The victim was awarded €64,000 in damages, but Mir can still appeal the verdict.

Mill has publicly stated that his innocence “will be proven in court.” One of his accomplices that night, Pablo Jara, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and fined €6,280 for sexual assault.

Mir’s case was one of several to make headlines in Spain in recent years, most notably that of Dani Alves. The Brazilian was initially convicted of rape, but after a lengthy trial and two years in prison, he was acquitted on appeal. Former Celta Vigo captain Hugo Malo was also found guilty of sexually assaulting Espanyol’s mascot.
