Tottenham Hotspur could be heading for a major defensive overhaul, with Cristian Romero reportedly a serious possibility of leaving the club this summer.

According to journalist Nicolò Sylla, the Argentina international has received a bid and is no longer considered central to coach Roberto De Zerbi’s plans.

It would be a big change of direction for the Spurs, considering Romero has been one of the most touted defenders in recent seasons.

Timing is important. Tottenham are undergoing a major rebuild under De Zerbi after a difficult season, and the new manager appears determined to rebuild the team in his image.

The Times reported that Spurs are targeting several new additions as part of a wider reset, including defensive reinforcements.

Why does exit feel possible now?

Romero’s future has been debated for months.

Sky Sports previously reported that Atletico Madrid were interested in signing him, but talkSPORT claimed there was growing uncertainty about his position at Spurs.

From Tottenham’s point of view, selling Romero is a risk but not an understandable one.

He is aggressive, experienced and a World Cup winner, but if De Zerbi wants a different type of centre-back, Spurs may feel now is the best time to make money.

De Zerbi wants to defend himself

Tottenham are already looking to strengthen their backline, with Jan Paul van Hecke already part of De Zerbi’s defensive rebuild.

Luka Vuskovic’s future has also been discussed following Brighton’s interest.

This makes it clear that the Spurs aren’t just adding depth. They are changing the structure of their defense.

Romero’s departure is not confirmed, but the situation appears to be more open than before.

If a strong bid is received, Tottenham may decide that a sale will help fund De Zerbi’s new project.
