Barcelona’s salary cap issues have been well-documented over the years, with the Catalan team often having to make tough exit decisions, and there is no shortage of financial engineering to register players. A large part of that is due to rising wages in the early part of the decade, which still haunts them today.

At least that’s the case with veteran goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The 34-year-old signed a new contract with Barcelona until 2028 two years ago, but the signing of João Garcia has left him redundant to meet the club’s demands. Despite being captain, Barcelona have been keen to sign him for some time.

Last season, Ter Stegen left for Girona on loan for the second half of the season in the January transfer window, but was injured after just a few weeks at Montilivi. He will be loaned to Ajax this season, but they are reluctant to pay much of his high salary. According to Marca, Barcelona will have to cover around €15 million (approximately £12.94 million) in wages over the season. This is equivalent to about 10-15% of the player’s total annual salary, which is his second collaboration with manager Michel Sanchez.

There is still time to sort things out, but Barcelona need to secure around 16 million euros for Anthony Gordon and make sure they have enough space within this summer’s salary cap to accommodate his salary. This is likely to be around €30m (£25.88m), and Ter Stegen’s departure could help with that. The Catalan side will no doubt pursue a few sales this summer in order to ease the salary cap situation again this summer, even if they hope to get back within the cap this summer.
