Arsenal are understood to be cautiously optimistic about agreeing a deal for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães for between £75m and £80m.

As first reported in an exclusive article here by Daily Briefing, Arsenal continue to hold talks with Newcastle over the signing of Guimarães, despite the Magpies having already rejected two offers and not being keen on selling him.

There remains a feeling that Arsenal and Newcastle will likely reach an agreement, as negotiations have not been broken off at this stage and Guimarães himself has officially informed the club that he wants to be allowed to move to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal have been keeping an eye on the Brazil international recently, but remain interested in Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.

Arsenal aim to strengthen midfield with Bruno Guimarães

Arsenal have a world-class midfield duo in Declan Rice and Martin Zvimendi, while Miles Lewis-Skelly also had some great performances in that position towards the end of the season.

Still, Mikel Arteta could use more depth and Guimarães also looks like a player who could provide the team with a bit more quality on the ball, with a style of play that focuses on line-breaking passes and creative play that moves the team forward.

The 28-year-old would certainly be too good to remain in a Newcastle side that looks to be in the doldrums at the moment, with Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali already leaving this summer.

This follows a disappointing season for NUFC, once again missing out on Champions League qualification, so it’s understandable that a player like Guimarães would be tempted by the chance to join Arsenal.

Bruno Guimarães could be a winner at Arsenal

Guimarães won the Carabao Cup during his time at Newcastle, but must be a bit disappointed overall with the way the project is progressing at St James’ Park.

Meanwhile, at Arsenal, the former Lyon man should be more confident of winning a big trophy after Arteta’s side have just won the Premier League title but were unlucky to lose the Champions League final on penalties.

He will no doubt feel this is the right move for him, as signing a deal like Guimarães would put Arsenal in a good position to win more silver medals, and at his age this could be his last big chance.

Scott could also be an option at a similar price, but at the moment Bournemouth insist he is not for sale and are trying to force him to sign a new contract.
