His combination of ball winning ability, physical strength and progressive carrying makes him an attractive option for Premier League clubs looking for more energy in midfield.

As of July 20, neither Liverpool nor United have made a formal offer, meaning Roma remain in control of the situation.

Liverpool keep an eye on connections as Roma demand big transfer fee

The main claim comes from a report by Football Insider that Liverpool have joined the race to sign Manu Kone.

According to reports, Liverpool scouts have observed the midfielder during the World Cup and he is being considered by new manager Andoni Iraola to shape his squad for the 2026-27 season.

Roma believe the connection is worth around €60m (about £51m). This Is Anfield reported that Atletico Madrid had previously made an offer of around £34 million, but that offer was not enough to persuade Roma to sell.

Manchester United are also considering a move. talkSPORT reports that United have inquired about the connection as manager Michael Carrick looks for another ball-carrying midfielder following the additions of Andrej Santos and Youri Tielemans.

Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini has publicly stated that he wants Kone to remain in Italy, but admitted in an official Roma interview that an unusual offer could change the club’s position.

Why Kone could be a perfect fit for Andoni Iraola’s team

Liverpool could offer Kone a more defined sporting role. Iraola’s high-intensity approach requires a midfielder who can regain possession, cover large areas and move the ball forward quickly, three qualities that suit the French international.

Kone is not a traditional holding midfielder. Liverpool will still need a proper defensive structure around him, as his greatest value lies in disrupting attacks and retaining possession through pressure.

A reported £51 million valuation is high, but not unreasonable for a 25-year-old international with Bundesliga, Serie A and World Cup experience. This deal would make sense if Liverpool view him as a regular starter rather than an expensive addition to their squad.

United’s interest may force Liverpool to act quickly, but entering the bidding war would give Roma an advantage.

Therefore, a structured offer with viable add-ons may be the most sensible approach.

Kone has the talent to improve Liverpool’s midfield, but the Reds need to be disciplined rather than meeting Roma’s full offer right away.
