Chelsea are refusing to abandon their pursuit of Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott after a substantial opening offer was rejected.

The Blues see the 22-year-old as a long-term addition who can provide energy, progression on the ball and Premier League experience to Xabi Alonso’s midfield.

Bournemouth’s resistance is understandable. Scott was a key figure in the club’s bid to qualify for European football last season and is still under contract, attracting interest from several of England’s leading clubs.

However, his decision to reportedly reject a new contract has created uncertainty, leading Chelsea to believe that another offer could ultimately force them to change their position.

No deal has been reached, but the rejected £64m bid could be just the beginning of negotiations, with Chelsea continuing to show interest.

Chelsea consider improving offer after first rejection

According to X’s Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea remain very interested in the Scot and are considering returning with an improved offer after Bournemouth rejected their initial offer of £64m.

The Cherries are determined to keep the midfielder, but several other clubs are monitoring his situation.

Plettenberg also emphasized the respect Scott has from elite coaches.

Manager Josep Guardiola has previously described him as an “incredible player”, and manager Thomas Tuchel is also said to rate his qualities highly.

These endorsements explain why Chelsea are willing to invest heavily in a midfielder who is not yet established as a senior England international.

TalkSPORT reports that Bournemouth value the Scot at around £80m and expect him to stay despite interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Bruce must avoid turning accolades into overpayments

Scott would fit well into Chelsea’s reinforcement strategy. He is young, local, technically stable and able to play in several midfield roles.

His ability to overcome pressure and carry the ball could give Alonso another dynamic option alongside Chelsea’s established midfielders.

What I am concerned about is the price. Bournemouth’s increased bid of £64m on their £80m valuation would be a big commitment, especially for a player with a relatively modest attacking potential.

Chelsea will need to return with a structured offer that includes achievable add-ons, rather than meeting the full asking price right away.

Scott’s potential is clear and his contract stance could ultimately weaken Bournemouth’s influence.

However, Chelsea must avoid paying fees for elite players based primarily on their future development. A second bid makes sense, but only within the scope of a disciplined evaluation.
