Edson Alvarez’s time at West Ham never developed as much as either the club or the player had imagined when he joined from Ajax three years ago.

Signed in the summer of 2023 to strengthen the midfield following Declan Rice’s big-money move to Arsenal, the Mexico international arrives with an impressive reputation after winning two Eredivisie titles, winning the KNVB Cup and becoming one of Ajax’s most consistent performers.

West Ham believed they were acquiring an experienced defensive midfielder entering the prime of his career, but his time in east London was marked by inconsistency, managerial changes and, most recently, a long absence from the club.

Last season was particularly difficult.

Álvarez spent the season on loan at Fenerbahce in order to rediscover regular football. However, the movement never really gained traction.

A serious injury that required surgery midway through the season severely limited his appearances, making just 18 appearances in all competitions before ultimately returning in time to represent Mexico at the 2026 World Cup.

By the end of the campaign, questions about his long-term future had only grown louder.

The situation forced West Ham to make an important decision.

Alvarez still has the qualities that made him one of Europe’s most respected holding midfielders during his time in Amsterdam, but after spending an entire season away from the London Stadium, a fresh start looks increasingly suitable for all parties.

This is why clubs are starting to take an interest as they already know exactly what the 28-year-old can offer.

West Ham are continuing to rebuild their squad following their relegation from the Premier League, and the transfer of players who no longer play a prominent role in their long-term plans has become a key part of the club’s rebuild.

Alvarez falls into that category, so this summer is a natural time for every team to evaluate their options.

Real Sociedad and Ajax compete for West Ham’s Edson Alvarez

Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Alvarez is expected to leave West Ham this summer, with initial inter-club talks already taking place between the Hammers and Real Sociedad.

Romano also stated that Ajax are fully aware of the situation and are actively working on a deal to bring the midfielder back to the Johan Cruyff Arena.

This latest information suggests the race could soon turn into a head-to-head showdown between Spain and the Netherlands.

Ajax have never hidden their admiration for a player who has enjoyed a successful four seasons in Amsterdam, developing into one of the Eredivisie’s best midfielders.

He made over 140 appearances for the Dutch giants, winning multiple trophies and playing a key role in their Champions League campaign before West Ham completed a £35m move.

Bringing him back would provide immediate experience to a squad that has grown considerably younger in recent transfer windows.

Real Sociedad also presents an interesting destination.

The Spanish side have built a reputation for smart recruitment, regularly targeting technically disciplined players who can thrive in possession-based systems.

For West Ham, agreeing a permanent move would finally draw the line under a transfer that has not consistently had the impact that many had hoped.

For Alvarez, on the other hand, it will be an opportunity to rebuild momentum after a frustrating season punctuated by injuries and uncertainty about his future.
