Debra Donaldson celebrated her first career win Friday at Gulfstream Park when her 4-year-old gelding, Skyliner, surged from last place to take the lead entering the stretch and secured a commanding six-length victory. Ridden by jockey Wesley Henry, Skyliner paid $14.80 and completed the mile and 70-yard maiden claiming race on the Tapeta surface in 1:46.73, marking his sixth start against four competitors, none of whom were claimed for the $17,500 price tag.
This marked Donaldson’s 22nd start of the year and 34th overall since August 2024. Now retired from the real estate and commercial property industry, she has devoted the past few years part-time to horse racing. “It’s been two, three years, putting every hour I have into this, so we’re really, really happy,” she said. “We finally did it.”
Bred in Florida by Thoroughbred Racing Nation, Skyliner began racing at Tampa Bay Downs on dirt earlier this year before switching to Gulfstream and trying the Tapeta track in May, followed by turf races with Henry, the latest on August 23. In Friday’s race, Henry kept Skyliner at the back, trailing splits of 23.83, 47.79, and 1:13.43 seconds before moving wide around the field and unleashing a strong finish on the fast main surface.
Donaldson recalled the horse’s wild beginnings: “Who thought Skyliner would be my first win? This horse literally trampled me almost to death a year and a half ago. I told his owner then, ‘He’s maturing, he’s maturing,’ and finally he is—he’s not quite so crazy anymore.”
Based in Ocala, Florida, Donaldson currently trains a dozen horses at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream’s satellite facility in Palm Beach County, having shifted from their home track, Citra Oaks Farm in Ocala, due to the summer heat. “We met Wesley Henry last year; he’s been riding for us every morning, and our horses are in great shape,” she said. “We have 12 at Palm Meadows, plus broodmares and weanlings from American Pharoah and Tiz the Law. We’re all in.”
