Khamzat Chimaev has issued a clear message to the UFC. Known as ‘Borz,’ Chimaev is one of the most popular fighters in MMA and often brings significant excitement to fight cards when he competes. Having lost his title in his most recent bout, the Russian contender is eager to quickly climb back into title contention, focusing on reclaiming the middleweight championship. However, if he doesn’t secure a fight before the year ends, fans might face a prolonged wait for his return.
Chimaev has been actively trying to get a fight scheduled but hasn’t had any success so far. He has requested the UFC to book him for a fight sometime between October and December. If nothing is arranged within that window, he plans to take a hiatus from competition.
“As for the fight, I’m trying to get one,” Chimaev stated. “I aimed for an October fight and now I am targeting December. But if nothing happens in those months, I think I’ll take a short break.”
Should a fight not be organized soon, supporters will need patience before seeing Chimaev back in the octagon. Beyond waiting on healing from injuries and potential surgeries, Chimaev revealed a serious health concern that threatens his career.
The fighter faces ongoing challenges due to only having half of his thyroid gland—a crucial organ that regulates energy, temperature, and metabolism. While fans hoped he had overcome this hurdle, the 31-year-old admitted he still endures illnesses connected to this condition, which affect both his fighting career and personal life.
“I have a lot of injuries. I need to get them treated,” Chimaev explained. “I’ve been postponing surgeries repeatedly. I enter every fight carrying some sort of injury. I don’t like discussing my problems or injuries much.”
“People know I fall sick frequently. That’s how it is for me. I have only half of my thyroid gland. I’ve had anesthesia seven times, six surgeries, and numerous injuries… I believe this is a fate given to me by a higher power. I still have to keep living my life.”
Fan Take: This update from Chimaev is critical because it highlights the physical toll and health battles even the most promising fighters endure behind the scenes. His potential absence could leave a significant gap in the middleweight division, affecting matchmaking and fan excitement in a weight class already rich with talent.
