Mark Walter has officially divested his shares in Chelsea FC. On Wednesday, Walter and co-owner Todd Boehly sold their stakes in the English football club to the majority owner Clearlake Capital, as announced by the team. Walter and Boehly acquired Chelsea in 2022 in collaboration with Clearlake Capital for approximately $3.3 billion.
Previously, Boehly served as the chairman of Chelsea. With Clearlake now assuming controlling ownership, it is uncertain how much Walter received from the sale, which comes during a challenging period in his career.
Recently, Walter made headlines when he sold the Los Angeles Lakers for a record-setting $12.5 billion to a group led by Josh Kushner and Bob Iger, surprising many. That deal, which came together in just a few days, marked the end of his brief tenure with the franchise after he had purchased it for a then-record $10 billion in June 2025.
Walter is currently under federal investigation for allegedly having his insurance companies engage in fraudulent activities, such as misallocating policyholder funds to other companies he owns without proper disclosure. Additionally, he faces accusations of utilizing those funds to finance his acquisition of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
However, Walter’s company, TWG Global, stated last month following the Lakers’ sale that the Dodgers are not for sale and that they adhered to all MLB regulations when acquiring the team for over $2 billion in 2012. Dodgers president Stan Kasten has confirmed that the team is “not for sale,” despite the ongoing investigation surrounding Walter. Nonetheless, after his recent sales of two major teams, questions arise about the potential future sale of the Dodgers as they aim for a third consecutive World Series title after clinching a playoff spot.
Chelsea has also had a prosperous year, recently winning both the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Europa Conference League. They currently hold a record of 2-1-1 in the Premier League following a 2-2 draw with Hull City on Sunday.
Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer enthusiasts as it sets the stage for potential shifts in ownership dynamics, which can impact club strategies and investment in player development. With Walter stepping back, Chelsea may seek fresh leadership that could reinvigorate its competitive edge in the Premier League and beyond.
