For the first time this season, reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez enters a grand prix weekend leading the world championship standings. The race for the title is incredibly tight, with Marquez tied on points alongside Jorge Martin, and only Marquez’s advantage in grand prix wins giving him the edge in the standings.
Despite this narrow margin, with eight races remaining, Marquez believes the championship battle involves more than just these two riders. “We are level on points, but it’s not only about us. Bezzecchi is also in the mix… From first to seventh place is less than 100 points, so a lot can still happen,” he noted.
When it comes to title-winning experience, none of Marquez’s rivals can match his record. He seized his first premier-class championship as a rookie in 2013, clinching the crown in a dramatic final round clash at Valencia against then-champion Jorge Lorenzo. Marquez regards that race as the most pressure-filled moment of his career. “I’d say the 2013 Valencia GP, fighting for my first MotoGP World Championship against Lorenzo. It looks easy to finish in the top four, but that cold final race was a tough Sunday,” he recalled.
Lorenzo attempted to raise the stakes by leading the race and slowing the pace, but Marquez stayed composed. Interestingly, Marquez thrives under pressure, saying, “Normally, with extra pressure, I like it. It makes me feel comfortable and sharpens my focus.”
Now 33, Marquez insists that leading the championship doesn’t change his mindset this weekend. “Being in front or just behind in points feels very similar to me. My approach stays the same, and we give our 100% every race,” he explained.
Last year, Marquez dominated with a perfect double win at the Red Bull Ring, while Ducati has traditionally excelled at the Austrian circuit, winning ten of the last twelve races there. “Ducati usually performs extremely well at this track. I enjoyed it a lot last year—and many other tracks too!” he said.
Having previously emphasized the importance of knowing when to push and when to defend, Marquez now sees this weekend as a chance to “enjoy” racing. “We’re in a good phase. Every race is different, but I am starting to enjoy it more, which is important for me. I know some races will be tough, but little by little, I’m adapting my riding style to suit the bike’s needs. We’re making some changes and I feel better with each step. Let’s see if we can maintain this performance,” he added.
