Spendthrift Farm is set to enhance its 2027 stallion lineup by introducing two Grade 1 winners, Baeza and Further Ado.
Baeza has proven to be one of the most reliable Grade 1 competitors of his era. Purchased for $1.2 million as a yearling at Keeneland’s September sale, he made notable showings in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes at age three before triumphing in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby. He maintained top-tier performance through his four-year-old season and is on track to have eight Grade 1 starts over two campaigns by the end of his racing career.
“Baeza checks every box a stallion prospect should,” said Spendthrift’s General Manager, Ned Toffey. “He’s a striking, athletic horse whose sustained elite-level success highlights his soundness, skill, and determination. Adding to that is his outstanding pedigree, which has already yielded two Classic winners. Baeza provides a remarkable blend of demonstrated excellence, durability, and lineage, making him a highly attractive option for breeders.”
Baeza is sired by McKinzie, winner of the Pennsylvania Derby, and out of Broodmare of the Year Puca, who produced Kentucky Derby winner Mage and Belmont Stakes and Haskell Stakes victor Dornoch. Baeza is Puca’s third son to win at the Grade 1 level.
Further Ado, owned by Spendthrift Farm and trained by Brad Cox, quickly established himself as a leading two-turn talent at two years old. After a dominant 20-length maiden win at Keeneland, he secured the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs. At three, he won the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes by 11 lengths and later captured the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes in 1:41.26, the second-fastest time in the event’s history behind only his sire, Gun Runner.
“When aiming to continue the legacy of a sire like Gun Runner, you look for brilliance, athletic ability, two-turn speed, and the right physical traits,” explained Toffey. “Further Ado has displayed all those qualities. He is an agile mover with the presence and efficiency you seek in a stallion candidate. We have had confidence in this colt from the start and are thrilled to bring him back to Spendthrift.”
Further Ado is out of Sky Dreamer, a mare by Sky Mesa, descending from a female family that includes champion and six-time Grade 1 winner Beautiful Pleasure, Grade 1 winner Dream Dancing, and multiple graded stakes winner Kimbear.
