The German Football Federation announced on Friday that sought-after dual-national defender Noahkai Banks has chosen to represent Germany instead of the United States.
In a statement, Germany’s U-21 coach Antonio Di Salvo mentioned that Banks, along with Tunisian dual-national forward Louey Ben Farhat from Karlsruher SC, have both opted to play for Germany.
“We have been in contact with both players for some time now, and we dedicated our efforts to them,” Di Salvo shared. “I’m delighted that we have established a future pathway for them with Germany and that they have agreed to it.”
This news is a setback for the U.S. men’s national team, which is currently lacking depth at the center back position. Banks had previously played for the U.S. at the 2023 U17 World Cup, meaning he will have to submit a request to FIFA to officially switch his allegiance. As of Friday, his request had not yet been processed by FIFA.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Banks has an American father and a German mother but moved back to Germany when he was just seven weeks old. Although he frequently visited the U.S. to see his father, he has primarily lived in Germany and developed his football career with FC Augsburg, where he has made 35 appearances and scored once.
The U.S. team maintained contact with Banks after his performance in the 2023 U17 World Cup, and he participated in training camps with the U19 and U20 teams. His stock rose significantly after a breakthrough season with Augsburg. Coach Mauricio Pochettino had included him in a training camp in September 2025, but he didn’t participate in the matches against South Korea and Japan.
Earlier in the year, Banks expressed his enjoyment of the training camp, praising the welcoming attitude of the older players like Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah. However, with increased recruitment efforts from Germany, Banks ultimately declined his invitation to the U.S. camp in March, indicating he needed more time to decide his international future, which effectively removed him from consideration for the U.S. World Cup squad.
Just last week, Pochettino confirmed that communication with Banks was ongoing, but as of now, he has committed to Germany.
