Patrik Schick is not particularly excited about the impending international break, especially after continuing his impressive start to the Bundesliga season with Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.
Leverkusen climbed to fifth place in the standings with a 2-0 win over RB Leipzig at the BayArena, thanks to an outstanding performance from Miguel Gutierrez, who contributed both a goal and an assist.
After a slow beginning, Leverkusen took the lead in the 44th minute, with Schick volleying in a cross from Gutierrez past keeper Maarten Vandevoordt.
Gutierrez cemented the win shortly before the hour mark with a left-footed shot that went under Vandevoordt’s reach.
This victory marks Leverkusen’s first run of four unbeaten matches against Leipzig in the Bundesliga, having won the last three encounters, and they thoroughly earned their win.
Leverkusen recorded an expected goals (xG) total of 2.27 from 18 shots, with Schick taking four of those, while Leipzig managed an xG of just 0.97 from 12 attempts.
Schick has scored in each of the first four Bundesliga matchdays this season for the first time, making him the first Leverkusen player to achieve this since Stefan Kiessling during the 2009-10 season.
His current scoring streak also ties his personal best in the league, a record he previously set in August and September of 2021, although he felt he could have scored more before the league pauses for a three-week international break.
“I could have scored two or three more goals,” Schick shared with DAZN. “But overall, we did a really great job. Unfortunately, the international break is coming now.”

Leverkusen has scored at least two goals in their first six matches across all competitions under Carles Martinez Novell, marking the first time since Rudi Voller in 2000 that a Leverkusen manager kept a clean sheet in each of his initial three home matches in all competitions.
“Defensively, we executed exactly what we planned,” stated Leverkusen goalkeeper Mark Flekken. “The counter-pressing was effective, we drew good fouls, and our defense was outstanding. Everything came together.”
On the other hand, Leipzig continues to struggle, now losing four consecutive Bundesliga matches away from home. Their previous longest losing streak on the road was five games from April to August 2021.
Currently sitting ninth with six points, this marks their worst start to a Bundesliga season since 2022-23, when they had only five points from their first four matches.
Though still adjusting under new coach Martin Demichelis, Leipzig captain David Raum emphasized the need for the team to adopt a more cunning approach for success this season. “In some ways, we’re still a young team and lack a bit of that ruthless mentality,” Raun admitted. “But we will keep pushing forward.”
