Senna Agius has revealed that the timing of his move to MotoGP was a key factor in his discussions with Tech3 KTM for a ride in 2027. His contract with Red Bull KTM Tech3 was confirmed during the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend, where the Australian rider was also given his first experience on premier class machinery during the post-race Pirelli test on Monday.
For the 2027 season, Agius will be among four rookies entering MotoGP, alongside Nicolo Bulega, Dani Holgado, and David Alonso. They are stepping into the premier class amid significant changes, including Pirelli taking over as the sole tire supplier from Michelin, a reduction in engine sizes from 1000cc to 850cc, and the ban on ride height devices.
The switch to Pirelli tires is seen as giving new riders an edge since they have already been using Pirelli in Moto2 (and WorldSBK in Bulega’s case) since 2024, potentially leveling the playing field against more experienced riders. Agius acknowledged that these upcoming modifications played a big role in his decision to push for a 2027 MotoGP seat.
“We entered negotiations with the mindset that ‘now is the time,’” Agius told MotoGP.com. “Not everyone is starting over — of course, the veterans know what they’re doing — but with a new bike, new tires, and new regulations, it’s a perfect moment to jump in while everyone adapts at the same time.”
He emphasized, “If I had the chance to join next year, I was 100% going to take it because we all believed the timing was right. I’ve got the opportunity now, and it’s becoming a reality.”
Agius expressed excitement about the future of MotoGP, hoping the category’s fresh direction would bring better racing and more enjoyment for everyone. “For us rookies, this new 850cc bike will be the standard, so I’m confident it’s going to be incredible,” he added.
