Tyler Reddick seems to have a winning streak whenever Michael Jordan, co-owner of 23XI Racing, is present at the track. Although not a strict rule, Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway marked the sixth time Jordan attended a race there, and Reddick secured his fifth victory in nine races overall—and fifth in six races with Jordan watching—by overtaking Kyle Larson on the final lap of an overtime finish.
Reddick acknowledged his impressive run when Jordan is at the event, noting that Phoenix was the only race they didn’t win with him in attendance. On Sunday, a late caution saved Reddick after he appeared poised to lose to fellow 23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin. In a late battle for the lead, Reddick clipped the wall but then benefited from Cody Ware spinning in front of them, which brought out the caution just before the white flag.
Hamlin expressed his frustration over the caution, blaming Ware’s late crash that changed the race’s outcome. Without the caution, Hamlin was on track to win, but instead, he, Reddick, and others pitted for two fresh tires for the overtime restart. After the restart, Larson challenged Hamlin aggressively, pushing him back to fourth place, while Christopher Bell hit the wall while attempting to take the high line for the lead. This left Larson out front with Hamlin and Reddick in pursuit.
Reddick ultimately caught up and passed Larson to claim victory. Hamlin had a shot at the win as well, but he crashed off Turn 2 on the final lap. Chase Briscoe, one of the few drivers on four fresh tires, impressed by finishing third and nearly contending if the race had gone another lap.
Praising Reddick’s performance, Jordan called him “unbelievable” during the final laps and expressed pride in the entire team. Reddick’s five wins in the first nine races mark the best start since Dale Earnhardt’s similar achievement in 1987. Earnhardt went on to dominate that season, winning 11 out of 29 races and securing his third Cup Series championship.
While Reddick is hunting for his first title, the current points system is dramatically different from Earnhardt’s era. NASCAR resets points after the first 26 races before a 10-race playoff involving 16 drivers to decide the champion. At present, Reddick is the clear favorite, leading second-place Ryan Blaney by 105 points.
Reddick remains cautiously optimistic: “We’ll see when we get to the Chase,” he said, referring to the playoffs. He aims to maintain his lead for as long as possible, hoping it positions him well to strategize for additional wins later in the season.
Sunday’s victory required some luck for Reddick, but his consistency through the first quarter of the season goes beyond mere chance. As Jordan noted, winning is always thrilling, and his presence at 23XI Racing has brought great success. Jordan believes the team must keep building on this momentum to continue their winning ways.
