Ricardo Pepi, a striker for both the United States men’s national team and PSV Eindhoven, described his recent injury as a “minor setback” on Tuesday, indicating that he has already begun his recovery to get back on the field with his club.
The 23-year-old lasted just eight minutes in PSV’s Eredivisie match against FC Twente on Sunday, where he signaled to the bench for assistance before being forced off the pitch.
In Pepi’s absence, U.S. men’s national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino has called up Damion Downs to replace him in the 28-man squad for four upcoming friendlies against Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Canada during the September-October FIFA window.
“I appreciate everyone for the supportive messages,” Pepi stated on PSV’s website. “Unfortunately, this is just a minor setback. I’ve already started my recovery so I can return to help the team as soon as possible.”
PSV has not provided a timeline for Pepi’s return. Their next game is scheduled for October 9 against Heerenveen at home.
Following that, they will play away matches against RB Leipzig, ADO Den Haag, and FC Porto.
Currently, Pochettino’s squad is missing all three key forwards from the World Cup: Folarin Balogun, Christian Pulisic, and Pepi.
Balogun made his season debut as a substitute for AS Monaco over the weekend, while Pulisic found the net for AC Milan against Lecce after his return from injury.
This news is significant for soccer fans as it highlights the impact of injuries on a team’s success, especially with star players absent. Pepi’s recovery will not only affect his club but also the national team’s performance, making his return eagerly anticipated by supporters.
