Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury are set to face off in their highly anticipated all-British heavyweight clash at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on 11 December. This much-awaited bout, over ten years in the making, will be broadcast worldwide via Netflix.
According to BBC Sport, the main event may kick off in the early hours of Saturday UK time, with a late start being considered to accommodate viewers in the United States. The fighters will meet at a press conference in London on Wednesday, 30 September as excitement builds for what is deemed one of the most significant fights in British boxing history.
Joshua, 36, expressed on Instagram that he aims to inspire a new generation, while Fury has yet to respond to the announcement. The fight is being promoted through a partnership between Saudi boxing influencer Turki Alalshikh’s The Ring and UFC president Dana White.
Alalshikh stated, “These two elite heavyweights of our era are finally set to battle in the ring. This will be one of the landmark moments in boxing history, and I’m delighted to make this fight happen for the fans.”
Although Joshua and Fury had previously signed contracts for the matchup earlier this year, the specifics of the date and location were unconfirmed until now. Both Wembley Stadium in London and Madison Square Garden in New York were considered but posed challenges, leading to Cardiff’s Principality Stadium emerging as the chosen venue.
The Principality Stadium has prior experience hosting late-night boxing events, such as Joe Calzaghe’s 2007 fight against Mikkel Kessler, which started at 1:00 AM GMT. Officials from the Welsh Rugby Union and Cardiff Council have welcomed the event, highlighting its potential to solidify Cardiff’s status as a premier host for major sporting occasions and bring substantial economic benefits, although some logistical details remain to be resolved.
Joshua had advocated strongly for a UK-based venue and has successfully secured his preference. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, thanked the UK public for their support, acknowledging that it was crucial to finalizing the deal. It is also noteworthy that Dana White, leading Zuffa Boxing, is involved in promoting the fight.
White remarked, “For over a decade, fans have eagerly anticipated this heavyweight showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Together, they bring an impressive combined record of 66 wins, 52 knockouts, and numerous heavyweight titles into the ring. On December 11, two of the decade’s biggest heavyweights will finally clash, and the victor will cement a major legacy in heavyweight history.”
Netflix’s official news release did not include statements from Hearn or Fury’s promoter Frank Warren. In fact, Hearn had previously expressed a reluctance about White’s involvement in the promotion.
More updates will follow.
Fan Take: This showdown between Joshua and Fury represents a defining moment for fight fans, uniting two of the sport’s greatest British heavyweights in a showdown years in the making. Beyond the entertainment, this bout could reshape the heavyweight division’s legacy and elevate boxing’s global appeal by bringing in fresh audiences through a major platform like Netflix.
