Red Bull’s upgrade package for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is expected to be the team’s final significant development for the 2026 Formula 1 season, as they have shifted the majority of their focus and resources towards next year’s car. The Milton Keynes-based team introduced a comprehensive five-part upgrade in Baku in a bid to narrow the gap to Mercedes and secure a race win before the season concludes.
Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies confirmed that these updates represent the last major improvement they will bring this year, with the team’s attention now primarily on preparations for the 2027 season. Speaking on Thursday in Baku, Mekies stated, “This is most likely our last key package. We’ve already allocated a large portion of our resources to next year’s car.”
He added that while they continue to chase their first victory of the season, they are also keen to use the remaining races to learn as much as possible, especially since next year’s regulations will see minimal changes. “We’re still targeting a win this year, which remains very important. Additionally, with only minor regulation changes for next year, the final races provide great opportunities to gather insights and ensure we’re well-prepared for the next season,” Mekies explained.
Red Bull’s technical director Pierre Wache described the upgrade, fitted on both Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar’s RB22 cars, as delivering the expected performance during Thursday’s practice sessions. “It was a positive step, seeing both cars benefit from the upgrade is encouraging. Initial analysis after FP1 shows we delivered what we aimed for, which is a promising sign,” Wache said.
Returning from a wrist injury that sidelined him for three races, Hadjar echoed this optimism about the new package. He noted that his car felt improved compared to when he last drove in Hungary, though he only completed a limited number of laps. “It feels good, especially after some time away. While today’s laps were few, I’m not overly concerned about pace. The new package maintains the car’s characteristic feel but definitely feels better than in Budapest, so I’m quite pleased,” Hadjar commented.
Fan Take: This announcement is crucial for racing enthusiasts as it signals a shift in Red Bull’s strategy from immediate upgrades to long-term competitiveness, which could influence the dynamic of the 2027 season. The focus on next year highlights how teams balance the present with future ambitions, a constant strategic battle that keeps the sport exciting and unpredictable.
