Deco, the sporting director of Barcelona, has stated that their interest in Julian Alvarez is “in the past” following their unsuccessful attempt to sign the Atletico Madrid forward this summer.
Reports indicate that Barca’s offer exceeding €100 million was turned down by Atletico, who later disclosed their refusal to negotiate with their rivals because of Barcelona’s public pursuit of the Argentine player.
Atletico also rejected Real Madrid’s €150 million offer, and sources suggested that Alvarez declined interest from Premier League club Arsenal.
This season, Alvarez has played four times for Diego Simeone’s team, with just one start, contributing a single assist across all competitions.
The 26-year-old recently returned from a short-term injury in the Madrid derby before rejoining the Argentina national team.
Barcelona signed Gabriel Jesus late in the transfer window following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, and Deco confirmed that any current interest in Alvarez has ended.
“Julian Alvarez is the past,” Deco remarked during the Portugal Football Summit.
“Barcelona now must focus on the future. It didn’t work out in the end. We made an offer, but [Atleti] would not let him go, so we had to explore other options.
“I wish him well and hope he can make a contribution to his club.”

Barcelona has also been rumored to be interested in 15-year-old JJ Gabriel from Manchester United in recent weeks.
Reports suggest that Gabriel requested a move from United, with both Barcelona and Madrid keeping an eye on the situation.
However, Deco has dispelled the rumors, stating: “There’s nothing concrete regarding this player.”
“It’s common for players to be linked to us, given the large market with various interests at play, especially for younger talents.
“But we currently have no interest in any player in that situation. I’m not fully aware of what’s happening, or if he is still with Manchester United. We are not engaged in that matter.
“Our priority is to understand the situation before taking any steps. Discussing young players is not our primary focus.”
