After nearly ten years of unsuccessful negotiations, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are set to face off later this year. The British heavyweights will clash on December 11 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, in a highly anticipated bout that will be streamed by Netflix.
There were earlier efforts to hold the fight at Madison Square Garden in New York, but Joshua’s contract specified the match must take place in the UK, a condition he firmly upheld despite strong interest from Saudi Arabia’s SELA and Netflix. Recently, the idea of staging the fight in the UK gained traction, with multiple venues considered. Given the winter timing and its retractable roof, Principality Stadium emerged as the ideal location.
Netflix has suggested broadcasting the event on a Friday instead of the usual Saturday boxing night. While the exact start time has yet to be confirmed, it is expected that the ring walks for the main event will happen in the early hours of Saturday in the UK to appeal to prime-time viewers in the United States.
Fury, 38, and Joshua, 36, will officially come together for a press conference on September 30 at British Airways Arc in London. Joshua, who holds a 30-4 record with 27 knockouts, is a former unified heavyweight champion. Since losing the IBF heavyweight title to Daniel Dubois by knockout in September 2024, “AJ” has rebounded with notable wins, including a seven-round victory over Jake Paul on Netflix in December and a resilient two-round stoppage of Kristian Prenga in July.
Fury, holding a 36-2-1 record with 25 knockouts, is also a former two-time heavyweight champion. After suffering consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024, including a battle for the undisputed heavyweight title, Fury bounced back by defeating Arslanbek Makhmudov by decision in April and stopping Mariusz Wach in seven rounds this past July.
Fan Take:
This showdown marks a monumental moment for boxing fans who have long awaited the clash of two British heavyweights at their peak. Beyond the thriller it promises inside the ring, the fight could redefine the heavyweight division landscape and reignite global interest in the sport.
