Sporting Kansas City’s captain, Lasse Berg Johnson, has called on his teammates to ensure they’re “on the same page” ahead of their match against the Houston Dynamo.
Currently at the bottom of the Western Conference, Sporting KC’s situation worsened last weekend when they suffered a 4-3 loss to the Philadelphia Union.
After starting strong with a 3-0 lead in the first 16 minutes, they conceded four goals within nine minutes in the second half, pushing them further from playoff contention.
Berg Johnson emphasizes the need for better communication on the field to help reverse their current struggles.
“We need to engage with each other and make real-time decisions about pressing, maintaining play, or going for second balls,” he stated.
“Our team hasn’t handled those situations well enough.”
“We need to analyze our performance and find ways to improve communication during the game, as players can often remain silent in critical moments. We must coordinate whether we choose to play long, press, or hold our position.”

In contrast, Houston Dynamo sits second in the Western Conference, trailing the Vancouver Whitecaps by just five points.

However, after a 1-0 loss to San Jose Earthquakes, they drew 2-2 with FC Cincinnati and have only secured one win in their last six MLS matches (D3 L2).

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH

Houston Dynamo – Guilherme

Guilherme netted his team-leading 14th goal of the season on Saturday, matching the second-highest single-season tally by a Dynamo player, alongside Erick Torres in 2017.

The record for most goals in a season for Houston is held by Mauro Manotas, who scored 19 in 2018.

Sporting Kansas City – Andre Luiz

Andre Luiz achieved his first MLS brace on Saturday, totaling three goals in his first four matches with Sporting KC.

With Luiz in the lineup, Sporting KC averages 2.25 goals per game compared to just 0.95 when he doesn't play.

MATCH PREDICTION: HOUSTON DYNAMO TO WIN

Houston has extended its home unbeaten streak to nine matches (W6 D3) after their draw against Cincinnati. They have previously had five unbeaten runs of ten or more games at home, the last being in 2019 (10 games).

After defeating SKC on the road in August, the Dynamo aim to clinch the season series against them for the first time. Historically, Houston has won only two of their last 11 regular-season matches against Sporting KC and hasn't been victorious at home since May 2021.

Sporting KC has scored three or more goals in three consecutive league matches, a feat they hadn’t achieved before in 2026 and haven't done in four straight matches ever.

OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

Houston Dynamo – 63.5%

Draw – 19.4%

Sporting Kansas City – 17.1%
Fan Take: This matchup is significant for both teams, with Sporting KC needing a win to escape their low position and revive their season. For Houston, maintaining momentum is crucial as they chase the top of the conference, making every match impactful for their playoff aspirations.
