Sovereignty, the reigning Horse of the Year, returned to the track for his first workout in a month on the morning of Friday, September 25, at Saratoga. Under the guidance of Bill Mott, the 4-year-old colt by Into Mischief is gradually resuming regular training while recovering from a hoof abscess.
As reported by Thoroughbred Daily News, Sovereignty covered four furlongs in 49.40 seconds, ridden by assistant trainer and exercise rider Neil Poznansky on the Saratoga training track. Mott described the workout as “nice” and “very normal,” noting it went smoothly despite being the horse’s first session after a break.
Mott also shared updates on the hoof abscess, stating it is healing well but not fully recovered. Sovereignty has a fiberglass or acrylic patch applied, which appears to be providing effective support and hasn’t caused any further issues.
Having won the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes on August 8 in his most recent race, Sovereignty is on track to prepare for the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland scheduled for October 31.
